What a Difference a Crew Makes!

Yesterday, I sat the couch from 6AM until Noon - it was a pleasure! Why is that? Because Wendy (a classmate) and Michael were on the couch with me, and we pretty much spent the entire six hours talking/joking/eating and talking some more. It was good.

There were several 2-day trips on the board for today that we decided we were going to bid on and "fight for" - but Michael, having the highest seniority got one of them, and the others were assigned to other senior reserves. Instead, a DCA turn for today appeared out of nowhere on my schedule. I was apprehensive, because the employee numbers of the other crewmembers were in the 700s and 1000s...I'm in the 14000s. Get the picture?

Anyway, they all made me feel a part of the team from the very start at our 6:35AM showtime. Our flight to DCA was only half-full, so we had lots of time to chat - first I chatted with Tonja and then with Lauretta. Both were curious about "the letter" that I wrote (my reputation precedes me once again), and after some good discussions, I think that they understand where I was coming from.

The return flight was close to full, but we still had time to chat about kids, hubbys, boyfriends, menopause, babies - it was a very good flight with a very good team. It reminded me how good it feels to have this job.

Celine Dion

Last night, a friend and I sat in the 14th row on the floor at the Celine Dion concert at the Pepsi Center. Jen and I were there the last time she came to Denver - October 1, 1999, when we sat in the 8th row on the floor.

What a great show. She sang some oldies and some new songs, she had dancers, musicians, and backup singers. It was a treat for the senses.

At the end of the show, these burly bodyguards asked me to wait a moment before we exited our seats, and asked me to step back inside my aisle "to make room for her to pass" - next thing I know, all the aforementioned dancers, musicians and singers paraded past where we were sitting on the way to the backstage area. And, of course, they were followed by Celine...she touched as many of the hands that were outstretched towards her as she could - mine and my friends included!

She is beautiful, about 5'8" or so, and SKINNY! She wanted to greet more people than her bodyguards wanted her to...so after accepting a bouquet of flowers from some young girls, she was swept away.

Back to Reality

Yup...I came back.

All us girls went to the museum after the play let out. What museum, you ask? Don't ask. Let's just say that I learned about the birds and the bees and the zebras and the snakes and on and on. But it was fun!!!

We dropped my sisters off at Penn Station so that they could catch their respective trains back home, and Jen and I went to a BBQ restaurant for a quick bite to eat, then back to her place.

I left this morning and had uneventful flights back home. On the little plane back to Colorado Springs I went to the back galley to talk with the flight attendant and to see what neat little cubbyholes they have back there. Once we took off, it was a short 15 minute flight back home...when I stopped at the grocery store, there were kids running around in flip-flops and shorts. Hmmm. I guess it was warm outside!

In summary, my NYC trip was GREAT. I got to spend time with my little girl. I got lots of exercise trying to keep up with her (it's a wonder I didn't get left behind). I got to meet Jen's special guy. And I got to spend time with my sisters - an unexpected treat (in an unusual place).

Change in Plans

I have a very enjoyable dinner with Jen and her boyfriend last night. I liked him! They are very lucky to have found each other in such a big city...

Last night I decided to stay another day here in NYC - Greg and the boys are in Breckenridge for the weekend, so there's no rush to go home. Also, I found out that my sisters Nancy and Diane were coming to town today to see "Guys and Dolls." What a good reason to stick around!

"Us girls" got together after everyone arrived by their respective "Plane, train or automobile (bus)." Diane flew in from VA, Nancy took the train in from NJ and I took the bus from Jen's apartment! We met at the Marriott Marquis, went across the street to Juniors for breakfast, and then took a walk over to 5th Avenue.

How many of you have been to the "American Girl Place?" OMG. I've been to the really big one in Chicago, and this one wasn't as large...but just as crazy!!! We watched dolls getting facials, haircuts, and one even got its ears pierced. We walked around there with our mouths hanging open. Then on to Rockefeller Center - there was a large crowd outside the door...I jokingly said to the doorman "Is this some kind of reality show?" and he replied, "Yes, it's an open call for the next season of 'The Biggest Loser,' but you girls don't qualify." Nice guy!

I'm now back in Jen's apartment - she and I will meet Nancy and Diane at the theatre when it lets out...then we'll head to a museum, dinner and then they'll take off by train and go back to their respective states...and I'll fly out tomorrow to head back to CO. Back to reality.

The "Windy" City

Nope...I'm not in Chicago. But I AM in a very windy city...New York! It's a bit chilly here, which in itself wouldn't be bad, but the wind makes it a lot colder!

I arrived on Wednesday evening to hang out with Jen. I got to fly from Colorado Springs on Frontier's little planes for the first time! And then we took one of our Airbus 319s to NYC. When I got to NYC, it was raining and cold. I met up with Jen, grabbed a bit to eat, watched a bit of tv, and went to bed.

On Thursday, I roamed around Central Park and the Upper Eastside while Jen was in class. That evening, we headed to the theatre at Madison Square Garden where we watched Kathy Griffin. Yes, I know...her language is very crude, but if you listen to what she says, she speaks the truth - what we're all thinking, but are too nice to speak out loud!

Afterwards, we headed over to the Port Authority for the Broadway Bowling League...a really fun time with all the actors, crew, etc. from various Broadway shows. Jen bowls on the "In the Heights" team - and she did awesome! The leagues starts play at 11:30PM and end at around 2AM - the music is loud, there's lot of singing, laughing, and clapping for strikes and spares. I got to bowl with her team for the second game because one of the members left - it was a lot of fun!

This morning, we got an early start and headed to Macy's for a special one-day sale. Jen got a cute cocktail dress for 80% off the regular price! Next up, we went to Bloomingdale's where Jen got her very first "Big Brown Bag!" (She had to buy a coat to get it!) Now we're hanging out at her apartment resting up for dinner tonight - we will be meeting Jen's boyfriend, James. I have my list of questions prepared... muahahahaha!

I head back to Colorado tomorrow - originally, Jen was going to be coming back with me because we have tickets to see Celine Dion on Tuesday night in Denver (it was originally scheduled for Nov. '08, but Celine got sick and had to postpone the concert) - but we decided that it wouldn't be a good idea for Jen to miss her classes so early in the semester. Instead, one of my girlfriends will be my date for Celine's concert!

More about my grilling..I mean meeting, of the boyfriend later!

And Now For the Rest of the Story...

A few minutes after I completed my last blog entry, crew scheduling called me with a DCA overnight! Fortunately, it was a 4-hour call out, so I had time to condense my luggage to just my lunchbox and my tote - no sense taking a ton of stuff for just an overnight.

I lucked out with the crew - they were all great! Our flight going to DCA was almost full and coming back was half full. Unfortunately, the layover is just too short to go visit anyone...especially if you're tired from your other trips.

We got back to Denver at 11AM yesterday, and I again heard those magical words "You are released to your days off." Only this time, my days off are significant! I actually have EIGHT days off! Woo hoo!

In celebration of my 16 Month Anniversary of my graduation, I've compiled a list of comments directed at travelers:

Smile and greet us when you board the airplane! We're there to ensure your safety, but we're also there to have fun interacting with you.

Don't wait until after you are on the plane to take out all your reading materials, drinks, etc.

If you are sitting in the rear of the aircraft, DO NOT put your bags in the overhead bins at the front of the aircraft...cause I will follow you down the aisle with your bag in hand telling you that "you forgot this...!" or even worse, I'll call you back and have you come get it!

Use the bathroom in the gate area before boarding the plane. If you choose not to, don't get upset with us when there's no running water to wash your hands.

Please bring what you need on board with you - i.e. Moms should have adequate milk for their babies, diabetics should have their own OJ, pill takers should be prepared and have their own bottled water - we can't always give you what you need during the boarding process - we've all got our assigned duties that we need to do in order to leave the gate.

Don't come on board joking and kidding around how you've been drinking all afternoon cause you're scared of flying...chances are real good that you'll be escorted off the plane so that you can take a later flight once you've sobered up.

Please, please, please don't come on board if you're feeling ill. No one wants a medical emergency at 30,000 feet...especially me.

If you need something during the flight, I always think it's nice when a passenger calls out "Susan" instead of just "Miss" or "Ma'am" - it shows that they were actually listening during the safety demo!

Speaking of the safety demo - please be quiet and at least act like you're listening. There are actually people on board who have never flown and who would like to hear the information. It's amazing, how after a plane crash, people pay attention for a week or two...and then it's back to the usual.

If you've liked what we've done or how we've treated you - tell us. Better yet, tell our company. Let them know that you can tell that we love our jobs.

A Few Thoughts

Last night's trip home went smoothly. We brought back a different aircraft, and it was just the crew - no passengers. During take-off, the other two flight attendants sat in the flightdeck and then I took my turn as we were landing. Almost makes me want to learn how to fly. So cool.

Overall, it was an interesting day. I was kind of dreading it, not knowing how the other flight attendants were going to be with me...after my crewroom "talk" with one of my hate mail writers, I was a little sensitive. But I just focused on being the best flight attendant that I could be, friendly to the passengers and fellow crew members. We really did have a very good day for such a strange situation.

Since the trip got interrupted by our broken aircraft, crew scheduling removed the remainder of the trip from my schedule. The other two flight attendants and the first officer will be meeting in 45 minutes to go to Indianapolis, but another reserve has been assigned in my place. It was really nice when one of the flight attendants told me that she really wishes that I was still on the trip - I asked her if she was teasing me, but she said that she was very serious. It was a nice feeling.

Spontaneity!

Yesterday, I was assigned to fly the couch on the 6AM shift - I had to drive from Colorado Springs to DIA on snow-covered roads at 3:30AM...the roads were lousy on the first half of the drive. It was Friday the 13th, and the bad thing that happened was when a senior mama, who I had flown with in the past, confronted me and told me to stop telling people that she was rude to passengers. I cleared that up by telling her that all I was telling people is that she doesn't follow company procedure...and to be forewarned. Her response was that she should have told me about that procedure change ahead of time...interesting. I would have thought that she would have said that she has since seen the error of her ways, and is now doing what the company has asked her to do! I'm such a dreamer.

I got released and went home...but went to bed at 8:30PM, only to be woken up at 9:30PM by a phone call from crew scheduling. They assigned me to a 3-day trip...a turn to Phoenix and then an overnight in San Fran, followed by an overnight in Indianapolis - good trip!

Of course, it had a showtime of 6AM today. Deja vu...4AM driving on I-25 again, but this time in FOG. It was like driving in a tunnel with my eyes closed. I straddled the center dotted line and just drove. When I got to the crewroom, I was face-to-face with one of my hate mail writers...lovely. There was no bloodshed.

Before I knew it, it was time for my Phoenix turn. It had been 2/3 full the night before, but United cancelled flights (thank you!) and it filled our flight to overflowing. One of our trainers, Tyler, was on the flight with his wife and baby, and he spent part of the flight giving us some "recurrent training" - it was great! But when we landed in Phoenix, and all the passengers deplaned, the CPT came and told us that we weren't going anywhere. There was a problem with the windshield in the flight deck.

So we stood around in the airport for a couple hours waiting for crew scheduling to tell us what we were doing. They ended up sending us to a nice hotel for the day, and it looks as if we'll go back to the airport soon and ferry the plane back to Denver with no passengers (i.e. sit and watch TV or nap on our way home).

Sadly, we won't go to San Francisco, and I've already been taken off the Indianapolis turn tomorrow. Bummer. Instead, I'm back on reserve until Monday, and will be waiting for the phone to ring.

Magic Words

Our van left the hotel at 5:30AM - that was just a bit too early! But...we had passengers wanting to start their week in Denver, so off we went!

The crew was very nice, and I wish I had been able to continue on with them to Sacramento for their 20 hour layover...but I have Tuesday and Wednesday off!

When we arrived in Denver at 7:45AM, I made "the call" to crew scheduling - "Hi. This is Susan Moore #12345 calling in from a trip." The scheduler asked if I could hold on...and a lot of times, that is not a good sign. But she came back on the line and said those magic words, "You are released to your days off!" Wow! I got almost a whole extra day!!!

And boy...did I need it. I've had two mornings where I'd gotten up at around 4AM (Denver time) so I was pooped. I was having a hard time staying awake as I was driving home this morning - I was listening to the soundtrack of the Broadway musical "The Frogs" to help keep me alert. It was wild! When I got home, I said "Hi!" to Greg and the boys, changed out of my uniform, and then pretty much passed out on the couch for a couple hours.

I have a Church potluck dinner to go to tonight, and then I'll come home and go straight to bed. That way, I'll be well rested for my days off. I have LOTS to do...taxes, taxes, homeowners' board stuff, taxes, bill paying, taxes and more taxes. You get the picture.

A Long Day!

Last night I didn't go to bed until midnight...that was a big mistake! My phone rang at 4:15AM. It was crew scheduling letting me know that they had a trip for me with a 7:30AM showtime. It was nice being able to take a leisurely shower and being able to drive a normal speed on the highway.

The first part of today's trip was a turn to Sacramento. We had a bit of excitement on the flight leaving Sacramento...we hit a flock of pigeons on take-off! None of us even knew it in the back, but the CPT and FO told me about it...fortunately, none of the birds got into the engine. Thank God! But the windshield had some bird goo on it, as did the wing, but there were no dents!

Next up was our flight to Austin - it was a good flight. As we exited the airport, there were several trees FILLED with birds...it was like something out of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds." I did not feel too good being near those trees...

We are now in a hotel with a view of Town Lake...but it's dark and I can barely see it. And sadly, our van leaves at 5:30AM, so it'll probably be dark when we leave. I have some fond memories of Austin from when Jen & I came out here several years ago.

We'll be back in Denver early tomorrow - the big question will be...will they release me to my days off or will they send me on a turn?

Astounding Discovery

I just found out today that I offended a very dear family member of mine when I sent out this photograph in a recent email, which was labeled "Redneck Seafood."

It turns out, that this has been a dish that this family member has prepared for years.

This just goes to show that my family members are very colorful, indeed. (Especially their necks, I guess.)

Are You Susan Moore?

At 0530 today, while on the employee bus from the parking lot to the terminal, I participated in the usual small talk..."Where are you going today?" My answer was "I am flying the couch!"

The flight attendant next to me was silent for a few moments and then asked me that dreaded question..."Are you Susan Moore?"

Oh Jeez. Is is going to be one of those days?!? I answered "Why yes, I am! Why do you ask?"

She replied, "Is everyone leaving you alone now?"

My answer to her was, "Yup! Things were taken out of perspective, but now things have settled down."

Man. This was not the way to start the morning...fortunately, no one else bothered me with that topic today, and there were no hate letters in my work file. Whew!

I went next door to the managers' office to let them know that I had survived the past week... and I summed things up for them. "I feel like a SuperWoman...having such an impact and being 18 from the bottom of the seniority list! WOW!"

The couch was quiet today - I watched a video, read part of a book, and ate a nice lunch, all before noon. I got released until 2200 (10PM) - there was one 3-day trip on the board for tomorrow, but I just checked and one of my buddies with more seniority got it.

Maybe I'll have a nice Saturday at home...

Procrastination is the Name of the Game

I had a great time on my DCA overnight earlier this week. I returned home on Monday afternoon, and that's where I've been ever since! The phone did not ring on Tuesday, and on Wednesday I bid for the day off and got it! So that gave me two official days off.

I did get a bunch of stuff done, but I still have tons more to do! But all I want to do is take a nap! I haven't slept well the past two nights - Greg and the boys are gone - they went to a jet rally in Arizona, and the house is just entirely TOO QUIET.

I'm back on duty tomorrow for four days, and there is one four day trip on the board. But I doubt I'll get it, so I won't even try. Instead, I'll just take my chances and see what they give me.

Instead of starting a new project, I think I'm going to take a nap...when you start to fall asleep with your hands poised on the keyboard and your head bobbing up and down, I think your body is telling you something...

Politician Sighting

As we were arriving at our hotel last night, there was a taxi blocking the hotel van's path. Finally, the occupants emerged from the taxi and walked into the hotel, and the CPT and FO knew exactly who the guy was ... Rep Kucinich from OH. But the question was, who was the tall, gorgeous woman with him? Wife or mistress?

The FO did a little bit of research last night and came back this morning with a few answers... this woman, Elizabeth Harper, is married to Rep Kucinich - she is his third wife. He is currently 62 and she is 31. He is 5' 7" and she is 6' 0" and loves to wear heels.

No scandal here...

Suit of Armor?

I got a call from crew scheduling this morning to do a STL turn and then a DCA overnight. On the drive to DIA, I talked with my Mom, and told her that I'd be wearing my plastic shield so that no one could say things to hurt me...I was kind of nervous going back into the crewroom.

Three of my classmates were there - Wendy, LuEllen and Pat - and when I found a note in my v-file, I had Pat read it first. If it was bad, I was going to tuck it away and maybe never read it. But it was a "hang in there" note from another flight attendant!

The crews on all my flights today have been fabulous! I've had such a good time...I was in the middle of the cabin for my STL turn and I'm at the front of the plane on the DCA overnight. We are all getting along, we're laughing, the passengers have been great - they got to watch the entire SuperBowl on the flight to DCA - the flight deck could hear everyone cheer when the Cardinals scored their final touchdown!

Too bad this layover in DCA is so short. There are so many people that I could be hanging out with, but I need to go to bed! Our van is at 0745 tomorrow, and then back to Denver I go!
